What is a death doula?

A doula is a trained professional who provides emotional and practical support to individuals and families who are experiencing a significant life event, such as birth, illness, or death. An end of life doula (also referred to as a death doula) provides services for those who are dying and their families.

The services of an end of life doula can be both pragmatic and emotional, providing companionship as well as practical assistance.

Here are just some of the ways an end of life doula can assist:

  • Providing emotional support and companionship through difficult times.

  • Offering practical assistance with tasks such as funeral arrangements and end-of-life care planning.

  • Helping loved ones to process their feelings and emotions related to the loss.

  • Assisting with self-care and stress management techniques.

  • Facilitating communication and support among family members and other loved ones.

  • Facilitating rituals and ceremonies

  • Helping to collect lasting memories of the person, facilitating a memoir, life review or arranging for messages to be sent after the person’s death.

An end of life doula can be an invaluable resource to both the dying and their loved ones. The doula provides a compassionate and non-judgmental presence, and can offer support and guidance through the dying process.
